My local pet shop only sells 50 or 75 watt black bulbs. I think that they my be over kill in my 15 gallon tank. I want to keep it on the cool side of the tank. we keep our house on the cool side (62 -64). I want to be able to keep the cool side around 75 or so in the tank using a black light day and night. Can I use a rehostat to knock down the wattage if needed?

Yes, You can set it to a certain temperature and it will turn off and on. Make sure your using a reptile black bulb and not the type they sell in home depot which can damage their eyes.

Does this mean you will be heating the whole tank? Reptiles require a heat gradient to regulate their own body temperature. Leopard geckos need a warm end of their enclosure in the 90-95 degree range for proper digestion.

I will be using a uth on the warm side plugged into a thermostat to maintain the 90 - 95 range. I wanted to use a black light on the cool side plugged into a rehostat to take the chill from our cool house.

I figured a rehostat would help me dial in around 70 or so degrees on the cool side.

I do that occasionally in some of my tanks as well when the room temperature gets a little low. I just use the regular red light heat lamps though

Thanks!! I just got back from the local pet shop and found they do have 40 watt red reptile bulbs. I am in the process of getting the tank ready. I hope to try it out tonight. Want to be sure every thing is up and going okay before I get me leo.

Update. I ran the 40 watt red bulb for a few hours and I think it is going to work just fine. My temp on the cool side hit 70. I still don't have the uth yet for the warm side but all is coming together just fine!! Looking forward to my new leo once every thing is all set and running for a week before I bring him home.
