Removable habitat advice

I love the way some owners have made naturalistic cage landscapes. So I've been trying to make my own. But I'm trying to make mine in a different way, I'm trying to make mine so it could easily be removed and cleaned. I also wanted to make mine so that anyone could buy one and install it in virtually any cage. Another "must" is a removable top of the cave or hide that still looks natural. I was thinking that by make a whole landscape that fits most of the bottom of the tank there wouldn't be a need for lots other substrates.. it's sort of a lanscape hide that is also a substrate. This way the tank will have a very natural feel but be fairly easy to clean. Just take it out and wash.

also my "hides" will fit almost every 10 and 20 gallon tank on the market and it is planned to fit an Exo-terra 18 x 18. You need one hide for a 10 gallon and 2 hides for 20 gallon or exo-terra.

here's what i did. First I carved the hides out of foam:

below is one of my hides painted to look like rock:

the lid comes off:

with the lid off.. I've since made it look much cleaner and finished:

here's a group painted sitting next to each other:

Here's one of them sitting in a 10gallon tank:

You can see how little of the cage floor still needs to be covered with paper towel or something else:

and a couple more views:

Remember that even though it looks like I made it inside the tank.. it is fully removable to clean on the top comes off. I still plan to change the color and there are a couple more details I plan to work out.. But I wanted to get some feedback from some experts.. you guys.

I planned to sell some of these in my area... or all around. Right now each one would be a one of a kind, but I've already figured out that some would have specific uses and could be replicated. For instance I've already designed a version that would have a larged enough den for laying eggs.

Please let me know what you guys think?

Wow! What a concept and incredible execution thus far! I'm really impressed with the natural look of it. I would suggest magnets for the removable top of the cave. As for other suggestions, I think what you have is pretty awesome. I think tile substrate would be best for your inserts to follow with the stone look and the "cleanablility" of the inside. I can't wait to see how this project evolves as you get more feedback. Please keep this thread alive and updated!:main_thumbsup:

Thanks for the comments. I'll keep this updated. I'm getting ready to do a temperature test in the next day or so. I also have to figure out how I'm going to handle the corners with all the silicone. I have to buy a couple more tools and paint then I'll take some more pictures?

Really nice I love it. What kind of material is that your using?

The majority of it is cement. I added charcoal dye on the last coat, then used some acrylic paint. Unfortunately I only had red brown and black to paint with. Today or tomorrow I was planning to pick up some other colors. I'm still not sure whether I would prefer a dark or lighter rock color.

maybe I should make them more desert like. Very light tan and slightly orange.

I found that fiberglass works awesome with foam and balsa wood. You did an awesome job. You should expans the connecting idea for add-on hides and dishes.

thanks for the compliment. I do have plans for add-ons, I'm in the middle of making one that would hold 2 to 3 dishes. One spot for food/vitamins and one for water. First I have to make one or two of these ones final.

I'll let you know once I have some finals done..:)

I made some progress last night.. Rounded the bottom corners of the landscape so that when you set this into a cage.. the silicone in the corners wont effect the fit. Now the landscape fits nice and flush against the glass... with no space. Also I did some testing on an early tile.

In the begining there was a layer of paper glued to the styrofoam then glued to 1/8" plastic. This was intitially because I didn't have anything else.. Now I'm gluing the styrofoam directly to the plastic. This early tile got soooo wet that it started to seperate from the plastic and styrofoam. So I learned that I shouldn't use any paper. Only products that have no problem with water and other moisture.

Sorry for rambling.. this has sort of become a Build thread for me.

I'll post some updated pictures next time I make a change

Wow, I love the concept! It looks awsome! I would totally buy if I still used tanks. You're doing a great job!

Thanks.
Can I ask.. Why you don't use tanks anymore? Is it because you have too many geckos and it's too hard to clean all of the cages? Or is it cost per cage? Or is it space?

I have 2 racks now,but I still keep a special(not disabled in any way, just extra special to me and a retired male breeder)gecko in a 10 gallon long.I have been looking into getting another tank for a girl or 2,but I really want it to look natural. These hides look perfect!I would definitely be interested in a couple if you end up selling them. What did you seal them with? Can they take being used as a pooping spot?Great idea and great work!Maybe you could make magnetic rock ledges for reptiles that bask?Just a thought!

From my research there's a couple things to do still with cement. I have heard of doing water flushes to balance the PH and the other option is spraying with White vinegar, also to balance the PH. I think I'll neutralizing the ph with the white vinegar method, then spraying the whole thing with an acrylic sealer. Forgot the name and I'll get it for you later. Other accesories will have to come later.. right now I'm just developing the standard "tile" shape and process. Next will be water and food dish to match. I do plan to sell these.

Here's a picture of the latest tile and a color I'm working with.. I didn't want the cage to appear too dark, so I'm trying a more desert look.

with this tile.. there are 3 hide spots all with varying degrees of temperature.. hottest hide can be viewed from the back and the other two can be seen from the front of the cage.

Nice. How about putting in some fake plants?

Yes.. I've really been thinking about adding some green. It would have to be plastic, as I really wanted all aspects of this to be washable.
