What is the best way to remove hard water stains? Someone mentioned vinegar but I'm not sure if I need any particular type. Is there any way to keep hard water stains from forming other than precise aim and not hitting the glass when misting the tank?

get the tank wet and go over the hard water build up with a razor blade... it works wonders without having to scrub. to prevent them used softened water or just buy distilled water from a grocery store, they usually run about $.80 for a gallon

What element said, softened water or distilled water wont leave that buildup. Razor blade works fine, if you don't have one handy or don't want to use one, white vinegar can do it or lemon juice. However lemon juice and probably vinegar leaves a rather offensive odor sometimes so you would have to rinse it with water.
