Today my hubby got a message on FB from a friend of ours that works at one of the Pet co$ in our area. An adult leopard gecko had been brought in earlier in the day and was up for adoption. Apparently whoever brought him in found the little guy wandering around in their yard. He's dehydrated, his front legs are unfortunetally affected by mbd (didn't catch this until we got home), he's got some shed issues on 2 toes, was kept on sand (belly and feet are stained orange from it), and he's weight is a little low (not much, he's at 48 grams). While he was at the store they fed him, she said he was thru a dozen crickets. Given all he's been thru he's really laid back and doesn't mind being handled.

I picked up some pedialite and have already gave him a nice warm bath, got him situated in a quarenteen tank, gave him a bowl of calcium powder and herp vitamins (of which he came over and licked up a little), and gave him a dose of panacure. I also noticed he must've been housed with another gecko at some point because there's a bite mark on his head. (Looks too small to have been a cat or something)

I'm pretty sure we can get this boy back into better shape fairly easily, but the mbd has me worried. I do have calcium spray for his food and all, but let's see what you guys think. Got a few shots of him, hopefully they're okay enough to really see the leg that is messed up the worst. I'm not sure if his mbd is too far advanced to reverse without a vet's help.

This leg doesn't look too terrible.

This is the worse of the two.

Darkened this shot a bit so it's easier to see.

Also trying to figure out his possible morph, maybe a possible high yellow? As well as a name, any suggestions would be awsome.

He's such a sweet boy already, it's hard to believe someone threw him outside and left him for dead in this horrible heat we've been having.

There is no way to reverse MBD. All you can do is stop it from progressing and getting worse. The best thing you can do is what you have already done, give him a bowl of calcium and dust his food with calcium/vitamins. Unless he is acting like he is dieing, super lethargic, or something way out of the ordinary then there is nothing a vet would want to do at this point.

I also want to make the point that it is not appropriate to give an animal a medication without knowing for sure that it has a disease or parasite. Giving Panacur without getting a fecal sample tested for parasites is an irresponsible use of medication.

He definitely does look dehydrated, pedialyte is an excellent resource for that. I also dont think he looks that thin or unhealthy otherwise. Yes he looks like he could use some food in his belly but his tail is pretty decent size so he should bounce back in no time.

Best of luck with your new gecko!

I didn't think giving him the Panacur was irresponsible given the fact that he had been outside and eatting god knows what for how long.

Our vet had given us Panacur for our whole colony a few months ago without fecals.

To each his own I suppose...
