OK i would like to start breeding roaches and they'll be for leo's so whats better to go with? dubias? discoids? or the little turkistan roaches? plus could someone give me a good caresheet for breeding roaches or give me some good advice on them.
The best thing to do is research them a lot first before making a decision. Take into account how much work you want to do, how you want to house them, the climate you are planning to keep them in, how fast you want to create a colony, and really what your concerns are..
I went with Dubias myself because they just seemed to be the best fit for me.. and my Leos LOVE them..
They do not climb - which is huge because I didn't want to worry as much about escapes
easy to sex
extremely docile
no scent
don't breed insanely fast but do breed quickly
slow moving and easy to catch
and thrive well in a variety of environments, generally warmer climates though..
their are a lot of care sheets out their depending on what you decide to go with..
google the name of the roach and add, "care sheet" and you'll find what you need.. I'm a member of Applet Roaches Forum and there is a lot of good information their as well..
Also, I'm a mod on Jason Decker's Forum HerpInverts and run the Roach section.. it lists all the ones you asked about and more..
i went with dubias. i havent really started to feed my leo's with them yet cus like all roaches they take a few months to get going. i have tons of babies tho. and i have fed some of my leos with them and they were gone in mins. they are slow and breed pretty well. like said above just look around on google and they have tons of caresheets
I currently keep 5 species of roaches for my animals (hisser, lobster, orange head, discoid and oriental, which are similar to lateralis). Of these species I prefer the dicoids because they don’t climb, produce well and my leos love them. No matter what species you get all they really need is food, water and heat and they are good to go.
My suggestion, as per my experience with roaches. Number One is to buy a small test quantity and try to feed YOUR GECKOS ........Mine and my gecko Buddies would not eat them. It could be because of our regular diet offered being preferred, or maybe just geckos that "doesn't like spinach." ..I'm sure they would eat roaches if that is all that is offered. It was not the case here.....I kept offering them and had a small quantity going that I finally gave to a guy at the lake fishing one day. Take care.
