I was dying to breed leo's but after long consideration I've changed my mind. I have breed other reptiles before but never for a profit mainly just to see them go threw color phases and changes. So to curb this urge I've decided just to buy a very young female and just enjoy watching her grow. What is the lowest wieght i can grab without risking it's health?

most breeders will not ship a leo unless it's over 15 grams. some even want them to be a little larger. if you are buying from someone locally or even a show, you want to make sure that it's been eating and shedding properly. i would stick within that 15 gram range if i were you.

you might not get to see one eat at a show, but if it looks nice and healthy, you should definitely ask what it's been eating. ive tried to feed some of my leos on the table at shows and not a single one has taken a feeder. could be the bright lights or just stress from all the noise around. now my beardies, that's another story, lol. they don't care what's going on. feeding time is feeding time ;)

My first 2 leopard geckos were from Petco, and they were just babies. It's been really fun watching them grow and go through color and pattern changes.

There's so much going on at shows that stress animals, I don't try to feed any of mine there, but make sure they're well fed prior. You can tell by visual inspection of all animals a vendor has to offer, if they've been eating well, compared to others the same size. Be sure to ask what it's been feeding on, and how often, and get those feeders to at least get a new animal started in their new home. If you try to change feeders right off, it could cause the gecko to stop eating the strange new food in an unfamiliar environment.

Well Merlin was a little smaller when we first got him, had me concerned about when he'd start growing but he's had a very healthy appetite. I wonder, where do you purchase a weight measure though for leos? And what's the appropriate weight if you've had them for a couple months like me? He has a great appetite and has shed three times that I have witnessed from the signs of shedding. And you can definitely tell that he's growing compared to when we brought him home.
