Sand and heating mats?

My baby leopard gecko is currently on loose sand but I have heard from some people that this is bad for them. Is this true?

Also, I have a heating mat for my gecko which sits under the tank, will I need a light for him too?

Last question, can I use bleach and water solution to clean his furniture? I got him on 29/11/14 and I think he's about 3 weeks old.

Yes sand is very bad for them. They can get impacted from it. Paper towels are the safest imo. You do not need a light, *just* the heat mat. Do u have a thermostat? And are you measuring the temps? I would not use bleach. Use a reptile cleaner.

Thanks, no I don't have a thermostat but I am getting one soon, I will change the flooring this weekend, that's really helpful

I use zoo med disinfectant cleaner for reptiles and it's only about $8. Bleach could case health issues for your baby farther down the road. And I would also recommend switching to something other than sand, paper towels or reptile carpet, I just switched to paper towels myself.

I wouldn't use sand although a lot of people claim to use it with out problems, I say it's not worse the risk I love my leo to much :) I currently use paper towels and/or newspaper (whichever is available at the time of cleaning) and it works great. Sure it doesn't look at that nice but it make up for the looks with how easy it is to clean lol
