I don't use sand. Bearded Dragons use their tongues to taste things constantly. To me, it's not worth the risk. I see that a lot of people use it, but I won't. I read a lot of some bearded dragon forums before I bought ours last year and most people on those feel that same way about sand as leopard gecko owners feel.

In MY opinion sand isn't worth the risk. Tile is very easy to install and clean. It doesn't cost alot and it can look very nice in a naturalistic setting. My boy likes to taste everything and I can't imagine that he wouldn't ingest some of the sand. As I said that is just my opinion. I know alot of people use sand and like it but with my luck, my beardie would be the one to become impacted.

in my opinion tile is easier to clean, you just have to wipe it down.

on the other hand i have talked to some top bearded dragon breeders and they say sand is perfectly fine as long as you have PERFECT temperatures, PERFECT living conditions, and you lightly spray down their salads to add more moisture. as long as you keep these 3 things in mind breeders have told me that they will have no problem passing sand through their bodies.

also keep it mind that it has to be washed, sifted playsand. most sand bags say it has already been sifted, but you should sift it through a screen just to get out all the big chunks that they missed.

take care,

It's a highly debated issue, but a general rule of thumb for most reptiles is absolutely no sand.

In the wild, tile is more similar to what they would be on anyway. Sand in the deserts we find these animals tends to be extremely compacted, not loose.

Remember that if you choose to use sand you risk impaction, infection (due to the fact that it's rather unsanitary), and other complications as a result.
