Sand will always spark a debate. I don't think calcium sand is the way to go since it promotes licking the substrate. I don't have sand, but it is your gecko and if you use sand, feeding outside of the cage is a must.
You would be taking away the major risk of sand ingestion, but I'm personally the type of Leo owner that asks, "Why risk it?" I find tile to be cleaner and more pleasing to look at. Not to mention their natural environment is not the sand filled box some people claim it is.
If you really want to go the sand route, play sand is your best option.
I worked at one of those corporations. The idea is to sell as much item stock as you can. They don't care if the gecko dies. They would rather sell tell bags for every ten gallon increment.
