Not often, but sometimes I get to catch some of my leo's getting a drink of water from their dish.

Most of them are pretty typical, walk up to the dish, hang head over edge and lick water.

Last night I was working in my study which is where all the tank setup's are and I caught a glimpse of the male gecko (Gus) walking up to the dish to drink.

He did the usual walk up to the dish and started drinking but then I noticed he started to dunk his whole head in the water. At first I thought maybe he was just trying to get something on the bottom but he was just drinking.

Pretty much his entire head up to his neck was submerged and he was just drinking away for about 15 seconds at a time. I dunno, I just thought this was strange. I've never seen him drink before so I dont know if this is something he normally does.

I watched him for a couple hours afterwards and he was acting fine. Ate a few mealworms and went to sleep.

Does anyone elses gecko like to go bobbing for nothing when they drink?

Hrrm.. i tried to find something on this on the web and only found one site where they guy said the gecko was trying to commit suicide (which i seriously doubt)

Anyways, the water dish is just your typical water dish with the water level probably only about 1 inch deep. When he submerges his head he is going in at about a 70-80 degree angle.

When he was doing this last night he did it about 4 times in 15 second increments. My main concern is that if he is submerging himself he is going to flood his mouth with water and it may go down the wrong pipes.

Basically i just want to make sure this is not something I should be worrying about. Or if I need to put a life jacket around his head whenever he gets thirsty

Im not sure but I think it would be fine. It seems like an animal as smart (maybe not much) as a Gecko would know not to kill itself. I mean they're not Turkey-stupid:main_rolleyes: :p :D

Cool .. thanks for you input. Im pretty certain it was nothing to worry about. Just wanted to run it by others to see if they thought it might be something.

I saw him do it again last night but for only one round. Then again, when i picked up my glass of vodka it turned out to be water. I wonder if he ended up with the good stuff o_O (j/k)

Anyways, He seems to be active and normal otherwise so for now im just going to keep an eye on him.

lol unfortunately I have been busy. But I do have the camera next to the tank setup.

Though last night I took a look at him after he was running around and noticed his entire head was wet so he may be up to his old tricks again.

If I can catch him in the act again I will definately post up a pic or video.
