Searching for a gecko species (Description)

Hey guys - about a year ago I saw a guy with a container filled with medium sized gray-ish geckos with big eyes. He called them Tibetan geckos, of some sort. Frog-eyed is coming to mind, as well. I'm not certain exactly what the name was.

Does anyone have a clue what I'm talking about?

Lol- Thanks!

Well it seems you may have the right genus, but without pics, its hard to say which SPECIES of Teratoscincus you may have seen. Did the gecko you saw have rough scalation? or smooth?

Thank you for the replies! As far as I can remember the scales seemed fairly rough - but I remember a big head compared to the rest of the body, and their heads were erect, looking around. Not laying down. And big eyes, as well.

Thank you!

I've never heard of these before, but they look really cool. Do they tame in very well/have good personalities?

and a different species often mixed up with the first one. Note the finer texture of the "fish scales".

The Frog-eyed geckos I have seen and handled are very jumpy and don't like to be handled. But in time and you handle them alot, I don't see why they can't tame down.

I've kept Teratoscincus for many years...handling won't "tame" them down. If an animal doesn't feel like being handling, I tend not to force it to...

Nice pics btw Brian...I've got the bug again, so you'll be seeing some more Teratoscincus pics from me...

I'd love to see yours. You have the "micro" ones right?

Mine don't like handling, but they will jump up and take mealworms. I actually had a female get obese because everyone thought it was "so cute" to feed her waxworms by hand.

Thanks a lot for the replies - looks like that's it!

What's the general care? Similar to leos?

I keep them with a warm spot in the mid 90's give or take ~5 degrees. At night I let them drop to room temperture usually 70's or even 60's in winter.

I keep them on a layer of sand. These guys are actually designed for loose sand substrate. I've found mealworms and beetles actually help them start feeding. They seem to initially like these the most. The first species I posted pics of will climb on top of stuff more. A few like sweet fruits/peach type things as treats.

Haroldo is probably more experienced then me at these so hopefully he'll chime in with his methods for keeping. I've only had these for 3 or so years.

BTW they will burrow under almost anything and can move literally pounds of sand at night.

Water doesn't seem that important. I rarely have water in with them because they fill it with sand. They rarely will lick at it thogh so they get it occationally.

Thanks so much, Gecko.

So a lid is important - would a 40 gallon breeder be fine for a few? How should the their moisture be supplied? Wetting down some sand? Moist box?

Thank you again!

I have a pair in a 20 gallon. Everyone else is by themselves in either a 16 qt box or a ten gallon.

If they don't fight I don't see why you couldn't keep a few. I have heard one species at least has aggressive females. (I don't keep it.) However, remember almost all you see will be wc and sometimes it's better to keep them alone during quarentine.

For water I give them a bottle cap turned upside down like a water bottle one. Or I spray if the water will evaporate within a day. I don't actually keep a moist hide. Mine avoid wet things usually.

I only keep two species though. Some of them require slightly different care.

Oh yeah in case I forgot to mention it they also dig like crazy.
