Shed boxes and stupid geckos?

It occurred to me tonight, as I was watching one of my geckos shed, that I have rarely seen one of them in their shed boxes. So I did all the research on geckos when I first got one. They need this and that and a shed box. Three of them I have never even seen in their shed box. My largest female is rubbing away on her warm hide with her shed box just inches away. So I question if this is really needed? Do their instincts take over, and they know what is good for them? Have I missed something? Or are my geckos just stupid?

Yes they do need it. Geckos dont always go in there, but it is good that they have that option, just make sure you that the shed box is moist, who knows maybe they do use it maybe you just havent seen them there.

Eight of my nine leos sleep in their warm moist hide. My one male Sunglow prefers to sleep beside his. My hypo tang likes to come out in the middle of her tank and shed. I guess she wants me to watch. My normal will stay inside his moist hide until he has finished shedding. They each have their own personalities.

I have two that like to sleep in their moist hide and the rest I either never see or rarely see. You want it there in case they are feeling a bit dry which will make shedding more difficult for them. It's also a good source of water, not all drink from dishes.

What are you using as the shed box and where do you have it placed? If they don't use it at all, it's possible they just don't like how it's built, what you have in it, or where it's placed. I would say majority of my geckos lay in their moist hide at least once a day, many of them sleep in it during the day. They love their moist hides.
