Shelf liner for substrate?

I'm still very new at all this, and trying to get things right. I've had my leos for a week now. I was using ceramic tile as substrate along with the UTH. However, because the aquarium is large one, it has 1/2" glass, and the highest ground temp I could get over the hotspot was 86. So I took out the tile and replaced it with paper towel, which has the temp perfect, but to me looks kinda tacky, as this is a main feature of the living room. I've been considering switching to shelf liner, like I've read some have used, but am wondering if this may give off toxic fumes? What is the long term experience of those of you who have used shelf liner as a substrate?

Many thanks

Thanks Jenn - I put some of that type in yesterday, but within a few hours, it started stinking up the whole house. Perhaps I'll have to leave it out in the sun for a bit to get rid of all the fumes. In the meantime, I've changed to brown paper.... not nearly as convenient as paper towels, but it looks better.
