Should I rescue?

I found a gecko in a semi-major chain pet store, in horrible shape I mean like the leo in the other thread, weight was exactly the same as that one. When I asked if they thought it was sick, they said no it's just a baby. Now how long they have this gecko, I have no clue. It was in the cage with 2 other adult geckos.

It is 30 or 40 dollars. I work for a vet who is not exsclusively herp only, but has some clients that are herps.. btw I take offense for the vet receptionist comments. I'm going to be going to vet school and have owned a Leo for 3 years.

Anyways should I try? ... my heart is breaking...

As hard as it is to let the little guy stay at the store, you just have to remember; if you buy that one, they will just get one or two MORE geckos, thatwill be taken care of in the same way. Its never good to support these types of stores. The best you can do is write them a letter, asking them to change their care. Or, if worse comes to worse, report them.

Honestly, I don't think so, for two reasons - if it looks that bad, it will probably die and it would save you a lot of heartbreak. Also, what you would essentially be doing is paying them to continue keeping the geckos in that sort of condition. If you were getting it for free from them because it was sick it might be worth it, but I wouldn't support them with money, even only $30. I'm so sorry, I know how hard it must be, but I agree with Jake here.

rationalizing.. do you think it could be because it was with 2 larger geckos? will they really change their ways? I'm torn but your absolutly right.

There's a very good chance that the large leos stressed it out enough that it stopped eating, but if it looks as bad as the gecko from the other thread, which just recently died, crypto is a possibility. As for pet stores, I have heard of them changing their ways and starting to take better care of their geckos, but it's very rare, especially in the large chain stores... I wish this sort of thing didn't happen, but as long as cruel, lazy people want to make a quick profit then sick geckos will be sold. That's the biggest reason not to rescue. If they stop making money off of dying animals they'll be forced to keep them in better condition.

Rescues are a lot of hard work. It's always better to buy directly from a breeder than to support a chain store. Breeders care more for the animals than chain stores in general (no offense to those of you who work at the chains, but from what I've read from some of you, you understand where I'm coming from).

I started the other forum with the really bad gecko and I have to say all the geckos at the store I got mine from were in either the same or worse condition. The manager was the one who helped me and she said there are some in the back who look even worse. To OP, I wouldn't buy the leo for the reason everyone on here has said, paying them money is just gonna continue these conditions on their animals.

Coming from someone who has tried and tried again to save geckos that came from chain stores...it's really not worth the heartache. I only ever purchased one little gecko from a chain, and that was enough for me. The rest I'd gotten second hand from people that bought them, they were dying, so were given to me to try and help. 9 times out of 10, they didn't make it, and it broke my heart again and again. I finally did something about it, and took steps contacting the right people in my area to get the store looked into for neglect. They have been doing much better lately so I hear...as I really cannot make myself go in anymore.
