Shouldn't they be dead?

I have 15 or so darkling beetles, they came from some mealworms at a petstore probably around 2 months ago, maybe longer. They are still alive and producing eggs...but shouldn't they be dead? I have some new darklings that I have added to it(only a few) and they seem a little smaller. These are not giant mealworms though.

I've had mealworm beetles live for many months. They seem to do fine as long as they get enough food with high moisture content. (fruits and veg) the claim that they die off after a few weeks or a month is wrong, but I've found that if they're kept too dry they do tend to die rather quickly. I also give mine egg carton to hide under.
