I have a pair of leopard geckos I bought at a reptile show in May 2010. They were about 7-8 months old when they accidentially bred in my house. They laid 4 eggs and 1 hatched. since then i have bought 7 more geckos (10 total). The female that i have had since may has been acting funny.
I used to have then in a 20 long divided aquarium. About 2 months ago they went into storage bins in a reptile rack i built. The pair was in an 8 quart, until I seperated them. they have their own 8 quarts now.
The female has not been eating for about the last week. Just now I picked her up, and she didn't move much. She was in about the same spot for almost 3 days now. She had some wrinkles under her chin. I thought she was dehydrated, so i misted her and gave her a soapless bath in water only a little warmer that room temp. The looked bloated for a few seconds, then made some noises like she does when she doesn't want to be held, and now is not moving at all, unless i poke at her.
They all have calcium w/o D3, heat, cool, moist hides, and everything else they need. she can stand, but does not walk very much.
Please answer ASAP! I will wait on this computer until I read someone's idea of what might be happening. Thanks, David

My gecko too.

I posted this am about my sick gecko too. They sound like they are doing the same thing. I hope someone answers you soon. My girl is now spitting out worms when I get them into her mouth.

The breeder I bought them from is texting me right now. He said if the cool side temp is low, they are probably just ready to brumate. I don't know what your cool side is, but mine gets down to 68 at night so that would make sense. I will probably just have to brumate them. Thanks for answering when nobody else did! lol

If you're keeping them in such small tubs how can you have a good temp gradient from one side to the other? if your cold side is 68 what is your hot side at? I was reading your care sheet on your web page and you state hot side temps of between 90-110 degrees... don't ya think 110 degrees would roast a poor lil leo? that's a LOT higher than I've heard suggested for a lot of leos by some very experienced people.

First off- there is no accidental breeding. It happens naturally when a male and female are together and is receptive.

Second- the enclosures they have been living in are way too small. Nothing was mentioned about heat? Have you provided them with a proper heat source and at what temp, how is it monitored?

Third- why are you poking at her? Do you like to be poked at when you aren't feeling well?

Forth- leopard geckos do not need to brumate.

Fifth- a lot is happening due to improper husbandry issues. I suggest you correct things ASAP and get your sick girl to the vet for a diagnosis ASAP.

Care sheets are available on this site at the top of the page as well as most breeder sites.

They bred because the female was gravid, and i decided if she could lay eggs that big, the eggs should be fertile, or it would be a waste
the cage is not too small, it is actually so much bigger that i was thinking of it as a waste of space. They have flex watt with a dimmer set to 90 in the cages.
I didn't mean poking, i meant when i picked her up, or gently pushed her.

oops. I meant the heat tape should be those temps. It should be 88-92 in the cage, depending on how much substrate you use. I will change the website to make it clearer about the temps.

the female was gravid BECAUSE they bred. not the other way round.

well i think youve got your sizes wrong then, if two people said that size is two small, then i dont think your saying the right sizes for the box/tub.

actually, you said.....

"The hot side of the tank should be between 90 and 110 degrees fahrenheit, on the terrarium bottom, over the heat mat. This is not the actual temperature of the heat mat. "

that sounds pretty clear that the /actual temperature of the heat mat/ should be btwn 90 and 110. ;)

has your leo lost weight?

oops. I wasnt thinking when i typed that probably. i will change it. No she is not losing weight.

the female was going to lay infertile eggs. She must have been bred with a male before i bought her if you think something else. I SAW the eggs through her skin, so i bred her just to be sure they would be fertile, because she weighed enough and was very healthy.

I do NOT have tank sizes wrong. You are not really the person to be saying that, because I didn't show ANYONE the actual sizes. they are sweater boxes. they are very big for one gecko. They are not tubs, they are sterilite bins with holes from a soldering iron.

This whole ordeal makes no sense. I suggest you get your story straight and repost in the health section. We will need to know the approx age of the animal, how long the issue has been going on, and the EXACT conditions in which she is kept, in order to properly offer any advice.

PS- tubs and bins are the same just various sizes, tanks are different.

Jeeze, you guys ..whats with the arguing ? that is not going to solve anything or make this situation any better. Lets just help this poor kid out.

Question.
Did you keep the new geckos all quarantined? you didn't put the new ones with the ones you had did you?

well you said '8 quarts' ... what size is this? i dont exactly know what this means but other people straight away said it was too small so they clearly know what it means and think it is too small. can you be more specific about the size? and answer some of the other questions others have asked and we can begin to resolve the problem :)

Well, there are 4 quarts to a gallon. So the 8 qt tub is therefore 2 gallons, which is 0.267 cubic feet, and that is absolutely too small. In order to have a proper temperature gradient, the tub must be a bit larger than that. Any other information on the geckos would be helpful, but I would think that a larger tub size would help for starters.

ETA: Most breeders use Sterilite tubs that are between 15 and 28 quarts, depending on if the geckos housed are juveniles or adults. Hope that's a good reference point.

15 quarts: 0.501 cubic feet
28 quarts: 0.936 cubic feet
