Sick Gecko

My daughter's gecko appears to be very thin but he has been eating until today. He is in the process of sheding but we are worried. His mouth looks a bit swollen and his body a little stiff. I see by reading that she should not have him on sand. I will have her remove the sand. Are there any other suggestions?

He is in a fancy Terrarium with lights and a heat pad. We also have two caves for him to climb in.

The stores in our area were out of crickets for a week but he has been eating meal worms.

What type of lights are you using? You should either be using A) heating lamp or B) Heat pad, not both. Can you get any pictures of the gecko, and the effected area? That will greatly help with the diagnosis.

Also, what are the temperatures in the tank? Has the gecko experienced anything like a fall or injury?

get the sand out fast, and keep the heating pad only.
keep the 2 hides, but make a moist hide out of a tupperware (cut hole in one side add papertowel moisten it) to help it shed.
feed the mealworms in a bowl, and make sure there is calcium in a bowl (same as mealworms if you want) in the aquarium.
get a fecal sample and take it to the vet to test for parasites,
if no parasites just continue heating and feeding the lil guy and hope for the best.

I have taken out the sand and turned off the lamp. I made a moist cave for him . I did find out the my daughter was feeding the crickets a food with calcium. He is very thin and weak. He has never stopped eating until yesterday.
