Good Day Everyone,

I have a leopard gecko who is almost 8 months old. She has a lot of trouble eating from these scab like things that have formed around her mouth. I am able to open her mouth, and the roof of her mouth is black. She will not strike on her own, I have to hand feed her. She will only eat one of anything, whether it be waxworms, crix, or mealies. I offer her food daily, putting anywhere from 2-4 refrigerated crickets in her enclosure, and she still seems uninterested. I know this question has been asked before, but not quite answered. I'm hoping that someone experienced with this can help me. She's getting really skinny, and I'm afraid I'm going to lose her.

I don't want to have to put her down, but if it comes to it, I will.

Sounds like mouth rot which is an infection of the gums. Unfortunately it's quite painful and will make her feel pretty bad all around. If I'm right she'll need antibiotics to treat it and you'll have to see a vet for them. There is very little you can do to treat an infection like that at home without medicine. Arav has a listing of reptile vets in lots of areas. Hopefully you can find a good one near you!

Definately get her to a vet, ASAP. If it does turn out to be mouthrot, the vet will clean the hard yellow pus out and put her on antibiotics. You want to get her looked at as soon as you can, because I almost lost one of my girls early in the year due to a severe case of recurring mouthrot (the antibiotics didn't wipe it out completely the first time). It is extremely painful for them to eat with mouthrot because pus hardens between their teeth and gums, and it causes swelling, bleeding, irritation, and such severe pain that they will starve themselves rather than go through the pain of eating. I hope that you can get her looked at soon, to see if it actually is mouthrot :(

I took her to the vet and they examined her, and said it wasn't mouth rot. I was given Betadine to give to her, which I have already given her. Because of it, the inflammation in her mouth seems to have gone down, and she has opened her eyes. I'm really unsure of what her condition is, but I really hope it gets turned around. Thank you!
