Silkworms - Dangerous?

So i have heard from a few people that silk worms cause the leos to drink a lot more water than normal. I have been seeing large puddles of urate and no poo. My question is, (1.) is this unhealthy for my leos?

(2.) Is this true?

I talked to coastal silk worms and he told me this isnt true that silk worms had more liquid than any other worm and that why the urinate so much eating them......

What is the truth and is it unhealthy?

I received the first bit of info about the drining form a member here (who i trust is being truthful) Just wondering who is correct and is my silk worm guy just trying to keep my bidness.

Not alot of people on here feed silkworms like me and you do, basically as a staple it can get quite expensive for multiple geckos, I only have 2 so its easier..but these suckers are still expensive. So its going to be hard for some people to judge because they dont feed them off like we do. I hope someone else chimes in and agrees. Its not a mystery that silkworms have large amounts of protien and contain alot of moisture. The extra urate comes from them drinking more due to the excess protein intake. The only way to see if its the culprit is to single out silkworms from the diet and see if this continues. It stopped for me after feeding them 2 everyday. Good luck:main_thumbsup:.....Silkworms are far from dangerous...but like I told you...you dont have to feed them like you do..everyday isnt necessary.:main_thumbsup:. Do you also supplement?..I would assume no but just asking. And this is just for others to know how much you feed them, would I be correct to say if you average 2 large a day for your gecko?.

yeah i trust you, but that dude over at coastal told me it wasnt true....basically i was just trying to find out if he was lying or not.And like you said.....just get some other opinions.

Also I thought about switching up the mix with some phoenix worms but they look so small...are they as easy to take care of as silkies?

what did he exactly say?.....If hes denying that silkworms have alot of moisture in them then hes trying to keep your bidness....but that shouldnt be the problem...you can still buy the exact same amount you buy, just dont feed them off everyday...they last up to 6 days in proper condition without food. It's the excess protien intake that can make him drink more and urate more....only a suggesti

I know when my leos kill a silky there is a pool of fluid left behind sometimes so I know they do contain a lot of moisture. It's not very scientific but its what I've observed. :)

no he told me they had tons of moisture in it and thats why they urinate so much.....he told me i dont need to change up the diet at all and that phoenix worms werent worth my money basically.

I just have a feeling that he is trying to keep my business though....maybe not he may be a top notch guy.... I was just hoping for some other opinions. I trust you, just trying to hear from everyone.

:O:O:O. NOT WORTHY!?....dont listen to him. If you have the opp. to buy them and have the money to spend on pheonix worms...implementing them with your diet of silkworms is A+++...others WILL agree. I know you want to hear form others I dont want to sound like im trying to take over the thread...Im just bored at home lol. Him saying dont change the diet seems like he wants to keep you steady.

:huh2:....:main_no:. he must really need buisness......

*edit* all this im saying is in reggards to you saying you saw a large amount of puddle and if it happens frequently, I have been told and also read that if you do feed moisture rich foods in there diet that they tend to leak urate only on occasions which ive been told is normal...in my case it went past normal and something was obviously wrong thats why I let you know incase your in my boat. Have you seen large puddles frequently.?..if you have and your gecko is still acting normal with apetite, feces, and shes not lethargic you can just try and take out silkworms for a week or more and monitor, have you noticed him drinking more water?.

Edit: in his defense he said "Phoenix worms are not a stable diet" as in i should not feed JUST phoenix.

My geckos are ninjas lol, i have never seen them eat or drink...i just notice missing food and water...I never really noticed the large puddle of urine until i had talked to you pm....but also because i never really looked for the symptom either...it could have been happening and when i wipe down the tile i just never noticed it.

Feed them BOTH! The more variety the better chances of a healthy gecko. Silkies are great feeders, they are sort of like a gecko probiotic from what I understand, good for their bellies. With the exception of waxworms (for obvious reasons) I try to do equal parts of all good feeders. Of course they don't get say 2 raoches, 2 silkies, 2 supers, and 2 reptiworms all in one dish.. all of the time. I dont' always have everything together in my house all of the time, but I rotate them through. The more access to different types of nutrients/miconutrients/whatever... the better chance they will be healthy.

I just realized you said they are enigmas...do they have poor eyesight or show any syndrome?. Since they are generally a smaller feeder, some geckos dont respond to them...seeing as there enigmas there is even a higher chance they wont see them/respond to them if they show any signs...theres always a chance. Bells are suppose to have poor eyesight but my female gobbles them up. I would order 1 tub and see how it goes. And in terms of phoenix worms, I would say its not practical more then it not being a good staple..phoenix worms are actually extremely nutritious and pack a perfect balance....but I agree with des if you mix in both your golden.

I believe i will try this....should i put both worms in the dish at once or one species at a time?

any good phoenix places to buy from?

edit: they have not touched the wax worms and i believe it may be to the fact they cant see them but it might also be the fact that they just arent familiar with them....they do show enigma traits too.

You live in the states right?. http://www.phoenixworm.com/servlet/StoreFront is one you can try. Where ever you order them from make sure there 'genuine' like there site says, they are in this media that prevents them from turning into soldier fly's I believe. When I fed phoenix worms I had to personally feed it to them. My bell wouldn't eat them from the bowl. You can try leaving them in a bowl to see if theyll eat them, but I'm not sure how long they last out of the media incase they dont register them in the food bowl....chances are if they show traits they wont respond you might have to feed them yourself...me and my gf split geckos, i feed my bell she feeds my jungle so we cut the time...it was a pain in the beg. with my bell.

how do i feed them...with my hands or should i use tongs like for a snake?

tongs you would use for a snake im sure is big, get tweezers and just put them on the surface right infront of them I did this 1 by 1, there not as fast as meal worms....or you can just put some on the lid from the container and place it right in front of them.

I always mix up the bugs. I have one enigma that eats waxworms (the one with the more obvious syndrom at that) and one that doesn't. Hornworms can be good as far as a easy to see bug that doesn't move fast. However they grow insanely fast and are expensive. There are also butterworms which are orange, but you can't use them as a sole feeder or feed in large amounts. They upset their bellies in large numbers. They can be kept in the fridge though.
