my 4 month old male leopard gecko has a small piece of shed left on the tip of his tail. i don't want to try and get if off in fear that he might drop his tail. he is quite flighty and doesn't favor being handled in the first place. will the shed come off or should i try to get it off somehow?

You need to try to get it off. If it's just a small piece, what you can do is get a cloth that's wet with warm (not hot) water and dab it on as much as you can. Use a q-tip to push the moist skin away.

There are also some commercial shed sprays you can try.

Be very careful doing this to. Espiecally if your leo is flighty because he doesn't want to be touched in the first place so if under stress and knowing your doing something to its tail it will drop it. I've seen geckos drop their tails and it's not a very pretty thing and they don't look the same afterwards. Getting it off won't hurt him but probably just startle him.

You can try to give it a warm bath and it will eventually fall off.
