I was wondering if anyone else had tried to use slate tiles for their vivs? I can't seem to find any ceramic or other tile that isn't really slick. The slate offers a bit of traction.

But I was wondering if it conducted heat well- or at all- namely from the UTH under the glass... I worry it would be too cold, or conversely, get too hot if it holds heat too well.

I have slate, just recently did it. it looks fantastic although it was a pain in the arse to cut. when/ if you buy them check EACH tile to make sure they arent broken, cracked or fractured anywhere. i lost one right off the bat because i didnt check well enough. I got a pack of 5 at home depot for around 8 bucks, they were 12" square tiles. As for the heat retention, etc. i have desert wave (zoomed?? or zilla?? i forget) uth for both my tanks, nothing used as a buffer between the uth/glass or glass/ tile. i have no rheostat/thermostat and my temps stay between 90-92. It is winter here however so I may have to invest in one come summer. I definately recommend them. they are super easy to clean, i just use unscented baby wipes to spot clean and just scrub for my deep cleans...:main_thumbsup:
