I've been hearing people say a lot of good things about slate tiles as substrate, where would be a good place to get some?

It doesn't necessarily have to be a slate type tile, I use a ceramic tile with a gradient texture. Looks the same as slate but is cheaper. You can pick some up at home depot or lowes and it comes usually in 6x6 12x12 or 16x16. I actually install tile and marble for a living.. so if you have more questions let me know.

Jeremy012.....How hard do you think It would be to get s tile pattern (the smaller pieces already formed together) and actually grout it into my tank? I have a 3d background, so I can't just lay in tile without needing to go around the background. Think that would work well? Since you do it for a living....

What would be the best way to install the tile into the tank so that it provides a good substrate, but is also easy to clean?

Slate tiles rock. For my 20 gallon tanks (30x12x12), those 12x12 slate tiles fit in perfectly. You can either spot clean, or take them out, wash them, paper towel dry, and put them back in really easy.

Is the background very rocky? If so, you may want to grout just the tiles that come in contact with the background. It would be quite hard for you to get the correct fit if you do not have a wet saw ( tile cutter) another suggestion would be to use a dremmel, it's like a grinder but is much cheaper.
