as i posted in a previous thread, Eliza is not eating. she was always fed crickets and mealies. she slowly got herself off mealies and now refuses to eat crickets as well. I tried supers....she ate 1. I am going to get the stuff for slurry on Friday but had a few questions:
1- is the dog food Science Diet? isn't that hills a/d?
2- can i sub supers for mealies (i dont know if i can get mealies)
3- how long do i feed this to her? will it stimulate her to eat normally or will i be feeding slurry forever?
4- i have done a fecal on her (direct smear) saw nothing, but will try again as soon as she poos again.

anyone with advice please help. i dont like seeing my scaly baby like this :(

I can only answer #1 for you. Hills does make science diet but hills a/d is a prescription version or that food. If you cant get the hills a/d than science diet is the next best thing.

a/d is an antioxidant formula. A lot of vets carry it. I don't think you'll have to slurry feed her indefinitely. I'm pretty sure you can sub supers for mealies. Marcia (Golden Gate Geckos) can most likely answer any questions about slurry that you might have.

The recipe for my slurry is on the top of this Forum as a sticky. I use Hill's A/D because it is a very high calorie, high nutrition pet food designed for pets that need to gain weight or have been not eating. Most veterinary offices will sell you a small can without a prescription. I don't have any other experience with other types of canned pet food in my slurry.

Hills A/D is NOT similar to "Science Diet". Both foods are made by Hills, but the recipes are completely different. A/D is a prescription diet because it is not intended to be fed every day, and should only be fed in certain nutritional situations (usually in a health crisis).

Direct smears are practically worthless as a test for parasites. You MIGHT be able to see Giardia on a smear (if you are really lucky and used the right solution to mix with the feces), but you will not be able to see other parasite eggs. The best way to visualize parasite eggs is using fecal centrifugation. Fecal floats are decent at detecting parasites if they are shedding high #'s of eggs, but you will miss parasites that shed low #'s of eggs and parasites that shed "heavier" eggs than normal.

Posting pics of Eliza here could really help us to evaluate her body condition. Do you have any "before" and "after" pictures? I wouldn't start feeding her the slurry unless she has dropped a TON of weight. Geckos often won't to eat as much during the winter (brumation) and may lose several grams as a result. This is usually perfectly normal. If you start feeding her the slurry, she may just decide not to eat because you are filling her up all the time!

I have a gecko that went three months without eating two winters ago. She lost lots of weight and scared me pretty good. I had her checked out twice, and she was completely normal. She has since regained all the weight she lost and looks like a million bucks. Reptiles are amazingly resilient.

Hermalina wasn't eating for about 10 days. I think she was ovulating. She's eating again. Scared the water out of me. How long has it been?
