Slurry Recipe in the UK?

Hiya

I currently have a gecko with calcium deficiency, the vet has given me some critical care powder for her which I am feeding with a feeding tube twice each day, along with Zolcal (uber calcium supp) each day and antibiotics. This isn't going to last me too long however, and I'm looking into how I will feed her once this runs out, but I have plenty of Zolcal to last me. Her jaw is not yet strong enough to eat live foods, and in any case she's not interested in them right now.

I was looking at the Golden Gate Geckos Slurry Recipe at the top of this page, but I'm in UK and none of the ingredients make much sense to me. Just wondering if anyone has made this or similar in the UK, and if so what did you use? I'm tempted to just liquidise mealworms with supplements and try and dropper feed that, but I'd rather make something that's tried and tested!

Thanks for any help guys :)

The Hill's A/D pet food in my slurry recipe is a prescription high-protein and high-calorie diet designed for dogs and cats that are rehabilitating and need to put on weight. You may be able to substitute a small can of cat food in the slurry.

You should be able to find a small jar of baby food butternut squash or pumpkin as a source of carbohydrate.

The Pedialyte is a liquid that is high in electrolytes for babies that have diarrhea and can be found in the UK.

The Milk Thistle is an herb that usually comes in gelatin capsules found at health food stores. It is a liver purifier, and is an optional ingredient.

You can use whatever you normally use for calcium and vitamin supplements for your reptiles.

Mealworms work best because they do not degrade and become rancid like crickets do in the slurry. Also, they puree better without the ectoskeletons and legs of crickets.

Is the critical care powder the Carnivore Care from Oxbow?

Here is the link to the .pdf Marcia. Has your vet looked at this stuff? What has he said about this compared to your slurry? If a person's vet has this stuff, is this acceptable to use in place of your slurry/in conjunction with, etc?

I've used Oxbow's Critical Care Herbivore formula for my bunnies and my iguana and was pleased with it, and was wondering about the carnivore version (especially since it's being used in raptors too, and I do wild bird rehabilitation).

Holly, I have no experience with the Carnivore Critical Care formula. Since leopard geckos are insectivores and need the 'roughage' from insects to aid in their digestion (like fiber), I have always used mealworms in my slurry. Now that we have a nationwide mealworm shortage, I'm not sure what could be used. Crickets do NOT work well in my slurry recipe..

I know this is a really old thread (just stumbled upon it while searching this forum), but it might be useful to others in the UK who have the same questions.

I am from the UK and have made this slurry for my underweight female that kept producing eggs but had stopped eating. It really got her back on track!

You can get the Hill's A/D pet food from either your local vet or from Pet's At Home stores. They come in tiny little tins, not like regular or dog food tins. I think I got chicken flavour.

The baby food can be found in any supermarket like Tesco's or Sainsbury's. Boots also do a good range. I found squash flavour hard to find so have a hunt about.

Pedialyte is what I had trouble with, no body knew what I was on about! Not even the pharmacist at Tesco's. Instead I used diarlyte (sp?) which is virtually the same stuff and was suitable for young kids.

I didn't use milk thistle, but you could probably get it from Boots or Holland and Barrett.

I get all my livefood, supplements and vitamin products etc from http://www.livefoods.co.uk/

Hope this helps those in the UK trying to make this slurry :)

More info on slurry 'the European way'. I'm not from the UK, but this may help:

* I didn't find Ensure anywhere. After talking to some vets and chemists, I came to the conclusion that Meritene is almost the same product and is readily available here.

* I looked in several supermarkets and wasn't able to find squash or pumpkin baby food. So I bought a squash and pureed it myself... Just an idea, but I don't know how good is that.

* I had trouble also finding pedyalite, no one here knew about it. Since I knew they were electrolytes, I bought another brand. I don't remember the name, if anyone is interested I'll look when I get home.

* I didn't have a problem getting either the milk thistle or the acidophylus. I found two herbalist's near my house that have it, and didn't look further. Maybe if you don't find the milk thistle is because the common name of the plant is different in the UK. Because it seems quite common here. And if it exists in Spain, it must exist in the UK too :p
