How much would a small rack system with everything needed cost. When I say small I mean like a 4' or 5' tall 4' wide. What size tubs would I need to keep single females in each container. Thanks
Also, can you use those plastic drawer things that you can buy at wal-mart, or will they melt? Where is the best place to get thermostats and heat tape?
I'm actually looking for about the same stuff lol I'm making a 2'w x 4'h x 1.5'd rack and need all the same stuff. I know the heat tape is only like $2 sumthing a foot. A good couple of reptile supply sites are LLLreptiles and everythingreptilesupply.com. Also for the tubs I've been recomended walmart or target.
Material will prolly come from Home Depot or Lowes. Heat tape I'll get on ebay or a reptile supply site there's plenty good ones. Tubs at sam's club or walmart. Might add light to simulate day/night and a thermostat that can simulate day/night temps. too. Then I can put blackout curtins on the front and back.
Again, anyone have any plans for a small rack with heating? I am thinking about keeping the rack in my basement, and it is 75% of the time dark or with very very little light. Is it ok to keep them in mostly dark? Or do they need light?
Edit- There is some indirect light so they can be able to distinguish night from day, but still, not very much.
Use this basic theory , but use 15/32 qt tubs(or which ever size you choose). Figure out how many tubs you plan to use , what size and how you are going to configure them. From there plan out your rack. Home depot will cut sheet of ply/ malamine for you which is cheaper than buying premade shelving. you need shelf wide enough to cover your tubs obviously and when measuring your side height remember to include not only tub height, but the thickness of your shelves too.
For instance a 12 - 32 qt tub rack with 2 tubs per shelf would need...
7- 3' x 2' shelves
2- 4'x 2' sides
and a 1/4 back plate to regulate temps and sturdy the rack.
cost would be around $85 for materials, $80 flexwatt and connecters
These figures BTW are for sterilte 32 qt tubs put in long ways.
I just made a new rack just now(minus heat so far). It holds 12 - 32 qt or 24- 15 qt tubs and has 6 shelves. The material was 2 sheets of 3/4 malamine cut into 6- 48x16 sections per sheet. You only need 9 sections so you are left with 3 extra sections(add another sheet and get 2 racks) cost sofar was $50 malamine and $8 for the backing. Tubs will run around $75 - 85 per rack and heat tape will be roughly $85 with connectors. $350 total for everything including a herpstat is my estimate for a 24- 15 qt rack that should last many many years.
I am not the best at building, but can surely help you figure out what you need to build a rack to your needs.
HEHEHE, and I just finished a hatchling rack just now
1 sheet of malamine
5- 48x 14(shelving and top)
2- 24x 14(sides)
It holds 6- 6qt tubs per shelf with a total of 24 tubs.
Cost $25 malamine, $4 backing
16 feet of 3" flexwatt from beanfarm.com will run roughly $60
Tubs are 5 for $3.79 at wally world, so $20 for tubs
The herpstat(beanfarm also) from my previous rack will also run the hatchling rack
looks like $110 for a 24 tub hatchling rack that took 45 minutes to make so far and heat tape should take about the same time at most.
5 tubs for 3.79? are these the sterilite 1752s? cheapest ive seen them is $1 a container, but thats on sale, they are normally 1.99 a container anywhere around here...
