Do Hissing Cockroaches have much of a smell? More or less so than crickets? And another question, If i caught a roach in my house would i have to worry about something that the roach may have digested?

I don't know about hissing roaches, I have never kept them. I do how ever have a Dubia roach colony that feeds all of my insectivorous herps. The Dubia have a very faint smell that is not bad at all. 1000 times better than crickets. They are also much more inexpensive than hissers and can not climb out of glass terrariums or smooth sided totes you would raise them in. They breed a lot faster too. If you want to go with roaches as a feeder these are what I would recommend. As for catching roaches in your house, NEVER FEED THESE TO YOUR ANIMALS! You never know what they have been eating and they could be contaminated with insecticides and/or parasites!

Good luck with the feeder you choose to raise.

My junior high science teacher had a colony of hissers in the classroom, from what I remember (that was a long time ago :D ) they had a slight funk to them, but nothing horrible. Definitely not any worse than crickets.

I agree with Brian on feeding house roaches, you never know where they have been or if they have consumed or been exposed to poisons.

My dubia roaches climb all the time and the babies have actually escaped a few times out of the holes I made in the tote for them to have air. If you have any ideas on how to fix that problem that would be great. I did spray pam on the sides hopeing that would help but it didn't.

You can spread a ring of vaseline around the top of the tote to keep climbers in.

What kind of bin are you using! Some of them have a slight texture to the inside that the babies can hold onto. You can try packaging tape all the way around about 2 inches form the top. They can't climb on the super slick tape!
