ive been thinking for a while about getting a corn snake. And have been doing alot of research and i only have one thing that would cause me not to get one. I have pet cockatiels, in a cage, in my house and was wondering whats the general rule of keeping a snake and birds/rodents in the same house, as i know snakes have a good sense of smell, would this cause problems?

Well it is a problem, but it can be solved quite easily. Corn snakes are escape artists and will try to find any way they can to escape (although I have never seen ours do this), but all you need to do is put your Corn in a lockable, secure cage. We have a standard 20 gal. long tank and the lid snaps on, plus has a place where we can put a lock to make sure it stays closed no matter what. No more worries :)

Rats don't smell so bad, but if you have mice in the house, your snake will smell them for sure. This can cause the snake to become more aggressive at feeding time.

i dont have mice but i do have a guinea pig. I know that you should wash your hands after before touching a snake as this helps rid any smell. im not worried so much as about the snake escaping, more the fact when i go to handle it and it smells them would they become aggressive.

A corn can't eat a rabbit *unless it's a pink* and a full grown rat is still too big :p As for birds, I doubt a snake is going to go all GTP (Green tree python) on you and start bird hunting much less would a corn be able to eat a cockatiel before getting the bajeebus pecked/scratched out of him.

I know it can't eat them, the concern is would he take a stab at eating a finger that smelled like them...

Well, you should wash your hands before you handle your reptile each time anyways so it shouldn't really become an issue...

the only problem i've had with my corn snakes and birds is when my cockatiel sits on top of my little corns cage, the snake does try to get to the smell, but obviously she can't get out so it's not a problem. also, one time i was holding my bigger corn, whose viv is right beside the bird cage, and as i was sifting around in his viv to clean up the poop, he managed to get through the bars into the bird cage...it took a bit of effort to unwind him, but he wasn't aggressive or anything, didn't even try to eat my birds! :p and also if it's just being bit by a snake that you're concerned about, get over it because you WILL get bit one day! it's not so bad, i promise.
