Some thoughts on a reptile expo

Yesterday I went to the Indiana Reptile Expo in Noblesville, and unfortunately I saw some very sad looking herps. Most of the table had very healthy lizards and frogs, but there was one that didn't. There were two tubs that had beardies, and many of them were missing feet. One was a beautiful orange color but had no front feet, just stumpy arms. I don't know how that happened, and I probably don't want to. The same table had another tank full of baby water dragons. Many of them appeared to have jaw problems, an early sign of MBD. So even though you probably all know this, I just want to say that if you are looking for healthy animals, don't buy from a vendor if even one animal looks sick. And be sure to ask lots of questions, including questions you know the answer to, to test how much the vendors know. If they can't answer your questions, then they probably haven't been caring for their animals correctly and you could end up with a very sick pet. Sorry for the rant, it just made me very sad.

That being said, I did come home with two lovely red-eyed tree frogs that I got from a very nice and knowledgable couple. Red-eyes have been a favorite of mine since I was a kid (I was a bit obsessed and used to draw them in all my notebooks during class), so I'm pretty excited about that.

Yeah, I think that every reptile show probably has one of "those" tables. My friend had a guy try to sell her a dead tarantula! They're just in it for the money. They're easy to spot because they usually have a huge selection of different wild caught animals. A dedicated breeder usually just works with a few select species.

Congrats on your frogs! I can't wait to see some photos!
