Sphagnum Moss

Does anyone use sphagnum moss for incubation? I use it for my lay chambers now, but I want to try it for incubation. How do you know what is too moist and what is not moist enough. I know what vermiculite feels like for incubation, but is there a good rule to use with sphagnum moss?

use perlite, it's simple and nearly fool proof if you use "Albey's method"

spagnum will be hard to get proper hydration without dampening the eggs too much.

I was playing with perlite before to see how it held moisture and I didn't like it. I put it in an empty container and followed albeys method, but after a week it felt bone dry.

i am actually using that right now, and the eggs seem to be doing fine. it has been almost 2 weeks. i will keep you updated.

we have never had any problem with perlite....as long as you are using it right in the right container it should be fond. The moss might be too moist for the eggs, but I am not sure becasue we have never tried it. And if you dont like perlite why dont you use hatch rite or vermiculite? FYI:There are a million threads on here explaining excatly how to use them all

I use only moss. It's great because if one egg gets mold due to infertility or something else, the moss stops it. I had one egg go bad and the moss saved the other one. Pearlite will leach moisture if not done right, but moss will not. I also have a bunch from my frogs and chams.

Where can you get Vermiculite

We are going to use perlite, but vermiculite is nice too. You can get both at a garden store or agriculture supply store. MAKE SURE THEY HAVE NO ADDED INGREDIENTS! A lot of perlite comes with miracle-grow in it.

my first try with moss, i used too much water, and the eggs ruined, and a added just a little bit of water, and the eggs are doing great.

Perlite has worked ever so perfect for me in incubator. HOwever, my females LOVE sphagnum moss in their lay boxes !
