Standard genetic nomenclature?

Just curious-- I'm used to working with rodents, where fur color genes are researched to death and everything has a specific name. E.g. the albino alleles for all rodents are on the "C-Locus"; the symbol for full-color is always 'C', the symbol for chinchilla is always 'c[ch]', etc. I was wondering if there was any standard naming system for genes in herps? Or do you always just say something like "Mack Snow het Tremper", and then make up symbols for a genotype if you need to do a punnett square or the like?

I've always used "made up" symbols, ie...
MS=mack snow
N=normal
T=tangerine
and so on...
