Starting a new rack

Well just like a lot of people, summers here and i have a lot more time for my animals so i thought building a new rack would be a great use of time. :) Ive built one before that holds 5 - 28qt sterilite tubs which currently house a few breeding groups and adults, but with babies on the way (hopefully :p) im gonna need some more space.

Ive decided to go with a modified version of Nevin Moyer's rack featured in the sticky. (Here) Its going to be 5 shelves with 2 - 16qt sterilite tubs per shelf. Its only 10 tubs but that should be plenty for me, at least for a while. Im going to be using 3/4'' compressed chip board as suggested by Nevin. The shelves themselves are 23 1/2'' X 16 1/2'' and im going to screw them into 4 - 40'' X 4'' X 1'' boards for supports leaving space for the heat tape at the back on one side (again according to Nevins plans). I think i pretty much have the idea of what to do, but i do have a few questions and any suggestions would be very helpful.

Questions:

What length screws would be best?

Would i need to drill pilot holes for the screws so as not to risk splitting the boards?

Im thinking about using the BAH1000SC thermostat by Big Apple to run my heat tape. Im using a Johnsons thermostat on my current rack but this ones half the price. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this model? Is it a good pick?

And any other tips?

Thanks so much for any help! I just want to make sure i do this right. :)

It is recommended to use screws 1.5 times the thickness of your material that is going to be mounted.

As a precautionary measure I would recommend it, although it is not always required to drill pilot holes.

I have never used one, but the only negative reviews I have read about them is that it is analog, uses a dial to adjust the temperature and the relay may stick open after a few years, causing the thermostat to no longer work.

I use two Ranco ETC-111000 wired in serial so that one acts as a failsafe for the other in case of malfunction. Thermostats are one item that nobody should cut corners on. You can buy a pre-wired double Ranco for $150, or less if you are handy with wiring and comfortable assembling your own from two bare units. Do you have more than $150 worth of geckos going into your rack? I bet you do, so why risk your investment with a $40 thermostat?

www.pexsupply.com is also a place to purchase unwired Rancos from for a decent price.
