the steel city reptile expo is comming up in november. this was going to be my first show. but another vendor i talk with said that there are now "tax police" showing up because there is now a vendor tax or something? this was going to be my first show, and i skimmed though the site were you sign up for a vendor ein number. basically id like to do one or two shows a year and dont know if getting this license will warrant it. im unsure of costs, renewals, etc that go along with this. i have some private stock and need to sell off a few, its not a business, just a hobby. so i dont understand why you need a license. i mean, they dont go taxing flea markets and bake sales, why reptile shows?? any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Brian

I think what you need is a tax number hon not necessairly a vendors license or another term is mercantile license. It is good for one calender year, provides you with a tax # and all that you would need to vend at any show in Pa. It doesn't cost much to get a tax # from harrisburgh, but I think you might have to register your business name in order to get one (don't quote me on this). What I do for my business is just claim the income earned for the year on my taxes at the end of the year, this avoids the whole needing a tax # thing. I'd call harrisburgh and find out for sure what the deal is. Bake sales are usually charity events and fall under the tax exempt policy but they are cracking down on flea markets too so don't feel like they're picking on y'all. Have you checked out the website for steel city reptile show to see for yourself what is required to vend there? Maybe this link can help: http://www.businessnation.com/services/licenses-permits/pennsylvania-business-licenses/

To get a tax Id number you must register your business name and at most it is going to cost you $25. This tax ID number is yours for ever or unless you decide to turn it in. Its a one time cost of $25. If you are selling things in your state legally you must collect sales tax and pay that sales tax to the state you reside in. As for getting a dealer license, Pa requires it and if you dont have it you can be fined. I called them today and they are sending me the application out in the mail. The fee is $50 and the license is good for 5 years. I have no problem paying this if it saves me from being fined. I hope I answered your questions if not please shoot me a pm and I will help you out the best I can. I can also give you the number and ext so you can call and get the dealer license if you want.

Hour and 45 minuter drive for me but I believe I have a rabbit show that weekend. I'll have to double check.

Glad to hear that you are still planning on going. The prices really arent that bad. Your tax Id number is a one time payment and the dealer license is a 5 year deal. So its not really that bad at all.

LOL!!! JMG do vend at two venues the same day a lot dont they. I know next year I'm going to hit the big show in chicago. So I'm sure I'll lose all my money once I hit your table there.

How much has this show grown, I know the last time we went the building it was held in looked like it could hold a lot more vendors. When we went there was maybe 30-35 vendors or so.

Not really sure, this will be the first time I vend at this show but I have heard nothing but positive remarks. I'm going to count how many vendors are going to be there this weekend and I will post the number.

There are 50 vendors that are up on their web site for the show this weekend. These are the vendors that signed up early so the word is there should be about 10-20 more vendors on top of the 50 already signed up. Should be a good show.
