Stick on Thermometers

Where do I place a stick on thermometer to get the most accurate reading.? In center, on floor, warm side, cool side? Let me know, I am a newbie and I don't have my gecko yet. Help me out here.

I have a Exo-Terra stick on thermometer. At first, I put it on the floor. A little area where there was no paper towel substrate. I then found out that I should put it ON the substrate so then I took it of and put some tissue paper on the sticky side so it wouldn't be sticky anymore. Now I can take it from the hot side to the cool side and from the cool side to the warm side. This is just a suggestion so if you want to stick it somewhere permanently you can do that too.
