stop "rescuing" wild animals

i am soooooooo sick of people calling the pet store where i work asking how to take care of [insert wild animal here] they found "abandoned". they are never prepared for the care these animals need and 9/10 times they will be just fine on their own with out the aid of humans.

mother nature may seem cruel at times but she knows best. baby birds kicked out of the nest are tossed for a reason. many times parent birds can only care for one baby and it's survival of the fittest. that faun in the thicket you took home probably wasn't abandoned... and you really don't want a pet deer living in your house. those cute baby turtles don't need your help to survive and don't want to be pets. leave the wild animals wild please!

plus, wild critters can come with nasty diseases and parasites. it seems like every other week someone is wanting to keep a baby mouse or rabbit which can harbor lovely diseases like bubonic plague and tularemia and parasites like scabies (which is absolutely horrible when it gets between your fingers and toes).

it seems like no matter what we say people still insist on keeping these animals and not providing proper care for them. set the cuteness aside and put the critter back where you found it.

it's one thing to rescue an animal in peril, but another to just take in whatever you found at the local pond.

Hmm I see what you mean, some people take things too far.
A few weeks ago my brother saw a cat attack a small wild rabbit and it ripped up its leg pretty good, so he caught it and brought it home. I cleaned up the wound and kept it in a box in the balcony while feeding it clovers. After the wound dried up, I set him free in my neighborhood three days after he found it. Does that count as the "bad" kind of rescuing?
I've also found a small young squirrel before, it was running around on our driveway, and I must admit that it was irresponsible of me to take it in and try to help it. In the end, we took the squirrel to a wildlife reserve after two days.
I totally understand what you're saying, and I hope other people understand that not everything in the wild that ends up in front of them needs help or a life in captivity.

spooki, if more people had sense like you they wouldnt do it. i took in a baby rabbit once after my aunts dog ripped it up. after it was heeled we set it loose. we didnt handle it except to put it in the cage, we let it leave on its own.
i hate when people come into the petstore asking about a "lost" turtle or a homeless rabbit. for gods sake unless its in an immediate life or death situation LEAVE IT ALONE!

i agree you with 100%.
