Just wondering how often everybody changes their substrate? Also fancying a change from woodchip (controversial i know) but not sure what to change to... Calci-sand and repticarpet are a no go! :)

Any solid substrate. The key to avoiding impacting is to use no substrates that have loose material. Paper towels, slate tile, or newspaper are all good choices.

Tile works well. I spot clean it everyday and then give the tank a good washing every month, and no need to buy new substrate. the lowes near me has started to carry natural slate tile again. If it is broken you can get it on discount too, this only works for natural slate though not the ceramic tile.

ahh okay, ive seen that my local shop has some hemp based substrate making it digestible... may give that a shot as they dont seem to have a problem on the wood chip anyway :)

I'm using Zoo Med excavator clay, but a lot of people say not to use it. I have had no problems so far, the stuff dries rock hard. I feed my leo with a feeding dish to prevent any accidental ingestion and have a small dish of calcium for him so he won't try to eat any clay (I pick up loose pieces if I find any). You can create hides and shape the clay and form it to do many things. I've heard that slate tiles disperse heat well and they are easy to spot clean, I might try slate tiles next. Just a thought.
