Superworms

On average, how old should a leo be before being offered super worms? My girl is going to be a year in September and I wanted to start offering her a variety of different foods besides crickets and mealies. Any input appreciated :)

One year old is plenty old enough for supers. some people give babies little supers so I would not worry about it.

i agree with brandy, but dont forget it has more to do with size then age. even if she is a year old, she might still not be big enough to eat a full size super worm.

are you asking me sarcasticly? or do you really not know? any way, im not too sure how to explain it with super worms too well, but with crickets they should be a little smaller then the head of the gecko. so keeping that in mind, take the super worm idea and run with it.

Lol, that was what I was asking :) I'll buy some supers and see what happens, if all else fails it'll be good fishing bait for the hubby. :)

in all honestly it does take alot to choke a reptile. people are always worried about there geckos and snakes and so on choking because of too big a meal. ive had reptiles my ENTIRE life. ive never had a reptile choke(knock on wood!!!!) and i have made quite a few mistakes of meals being too big. all i can say is look at the meal, then look at the gecko's head and make your judgement call. if they have a hard time getting that one meal down, then you know better not to feed that big of a meal.

here is the last mistake i made last year. its was my girlsfriend's burm's first rabbit. its was a little too big. it was 6lbs. now shes eats them in 5 mins with out trying.

I normally wouldn't worry much, but there was one time I got large crickets (about 1.25 inches) when my leo was 32 grams. They just seemed way too big. I attempted to feed her one and she seemed to have a lot of trouble getting it down. She kept rubbing her throat across the bottom and looked like she was trying to throw up. It was not pretty, and I'm sure worms that are too big are easier than crickets that are too big, but still.

I do supers from a few weeks old on. I keep all sizes of supers. At a year old they can handle large supers (normal size you find most places). My colony of supers never usually make it to large, cause they get fed off first.

i give to my paroedura crickets more big than the space from eyes and never thei has got problems (and paroedura are really little gecko when they are babies)
i have babies of 3 months (leos) that eat supers without problems..i generally don't give them many supers at the same time and i never has got problems..
is think dimension of worms and crickets is something that you learn
