Switching to slate.

So I bought some 6''x6'' slate tiles today and I am planning on putting that in instead of the repti carpet. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or general concerns with it, or cleaning tips or concerns. I plan on just placing it right on over the glass, it seems to go on pretty well and shouldn't leave any cracks after I get them cut to size and fit tightly. As far as heating, I don't really have any genuine concerns, I intend to continue using the UTH and thermostat. I will be placing the thermostat probe on top of the slate to keep the surface temps good. I quit using a thermometer because it seems to be off but my HVAC multi meters temp probe is much more accurate so I have been checking temps with that daily so I havent been having any issues with that, just hoping it goes well when I get the slate in.

I would put a thin layer of sand under the slate, sometimes air bubbles under the tile can cause uneven distribution, and the sand helps with heat transfer. I switched all my tanks over about 2 weeks now and it is a breeze to clean. To make it even easier I put a napkin in the corner that they use the bathroom (except for Thor, he insist on using his hammock as a bathroom).

I agree with Lindz. You don't need so much sand that you need to worry about ingestion but it makes a good buffer under the sand and a very appealing "grouted" look between the tiles. Of course what is pleasing to one person may not be so to another..

I also have sand under my slate tiles... I wish Ozy would go poo on some paper or something... She seems to have a thing for pooping on smooth surfaces.. When I got her as a little baby I had her on paper towels and she would poop on the top of her humid hide.. Which was a smooth lid. Switched to slate and gave her a few days to pick her corner. Once she had her corner established I put a paper towel there... Come back in the morning, she had pooped, but not on the paper towel. After a few days of her NOT pooping on the paper towel, I took it out and she went right back to pooping on the tile RIGHT WHERE the paper towel had been... >.< Freakin brat. lol

Have you tried using a sand stone bowl? It acts as a great toilet. Striker really loves hers!
