After playing "phone tag" with the officials for a few days,Ive finally made some progress in my pursuite to take a chunk out of the petstore that sold me my first gecko(for ne1 who didnt read my intro, long story short, they sold me a dying gecko and a friend that used to work there says thats common as the owner doesnt like spending money on the vet).

After watching the poor little guy suffer and die,I was in a rage.It has always bothered me the way that the laws really dont protect animals with the same passion that they protect the people, and this just set me off. So today after speking with the state animal wellfare agency,I was told that someone would be sent to investigate the store, check to see if the animals presently there were healthy and being cared for.Thing is,they may be obligated to give notice so just as a backup,Im calling my local newspaper tommorrow to see if they will do an articale and if not,if I can place my own ad.Ill make fliers and hand them out myself if I have to.

When we took these animals from the wild, we took on the full responsibility for their wellbeing and it makes me so mad when ppl neglect that to fatten their wallets.Sorry this was kinda long but Im excited to make progress and jus wanted to share....

Good job! We did something similar to a horrible store in my area and we got them closed. The manager treated her employees awfully and she allowed dead animals to sit in their cages. She also refused to hire people that actually seemed to know what they were doing. :main_no:

That was another thing that bothered me,the two kids who were running the store when I came in knew as much about geckos as I do about rocket science. The clerk snagged the gecko up by his tail to transfer him to the box and when I asked what the gecko had been fed,he told me to buy him waxworms cause thats what it liked and thats what they fed it.

It's like I was told by a store "manager" after I complained that
the geckos looked skinny and sick;

"It doesn't matter, someone always feels sorry for it, and buys it"!!

I think that attitude pretty well sums it up for way too many (not
all) chain pet stores.

I have been fighting this kind of crap now for years, with very limited
success.
It sounds like you are pursuing all the right avenues, and if at all
possible, get news coverage, that failing, post your opinion and experience
on as many blogs and forums as you can find.

Best of luck :main_yes:

Thats what peeves me off the most! So by going to my paper and doing fliers Im hoping to pull out his customers and force him to take responsibility. It may be only one pet store, only a few animals helped, but thats more than worth it....

We had a family run pet store close the doors because of protesting customers. Customers complained of buying sick pets, unknowledgable (spell that five times, lol), and poor cleanliness. They got the health department and animal control on them. Finally they went to where it would hit them the most, the management of the mall! The mall management didn't want bad publicity so out they went. If they opened up in another city, we don't know, but they are not welcomed in Jackson anymore!!

Im hoping to get the same response with the newspaper and fliers.....can only hope. But it makes me really happy and hopful to hear that others have pulled this off and saved those animals lives who would have suffered there.

Like I said before, it's an uphill battle.
I have written more letters, and made more phone calls than
I care to remember, I even caused a store manager to be fired.
The trend is, you yell and scream enough, you finally see some
changes, however, it never lasts very long, and they go right back
to their old habits.
I hate to be a wet blanket (I guess it's an age thing!LOL!!) but it's
not like we are talking about cute little puppies and kitty cats here, these
are REPTILES! and they are pretty low in the publics "adorable pets"
scale.

You go girl!!!! We have complained on a local pet store in our area until we are blue in the face but unfortunatly, the store is in big with the local humain society and nothing ever gets done about them. I have resorted to just telling everyone I know how aweful they treat certain animals. I personally don't think the "cute" factor should matter. I am not a huge fan of spiders or snakes but I still wouldn't want to see one starved to death or kept in horrible conditions just because they are not my kind of pets. Any animals life should have value not just the cute furries! I hope that what you are doing has an effect on how they handle the animals. Don't give up! Best wishes.

Update

A man from the dept. of agriculture called yesterday wanting more info on the case and asked that I have my friend who worked there call him. When I spoke with the first lady it seemed like a done deal, that they were sending someone to investigate. Now maybe it might depend on what my friend says so i hope she gets her arse over here today to make the call.Im waiting on going to the papers until I see what the "officials" are going to do.And its sad but nats is right, the fate of a bunch of reptiles and bugs wont garner much attention, which is why Ill try to focus any media coverage or fliers on "the animals" without being too specific. But I know there are ppl like me, who value life in all shapes and sizes, and I have faith that this man and his store will NOT go unscathed in this fight.I have my ways.....

I am so glad to hear you are doing something to right a wrong. It is not fair to these magnificent to not be taken care of to the full extent of anyones ability. That is neglect if they know the animal is ill and simply do nothing about it because they do not want to "waste money".
