I am adopting a 3 year old leopard gecko from a women who hasn't ever handled him in the 3 years she has had him. Any help. I am fairly new and the 4 females I have are very friendly. I am not sure of this guys temperament but am preparing for the worst.

Take your time with this guy! Put your hand in the tank with him and let him get used to it. He may even climb on your hand. Do this often so he'll get used to you and he may let you pick him up every once in a while. Just take your time. =) Just because he's an older Leo doesn't mean it's the end of the road for him! He's still quite young in Leo years. They can live up to 20 in prime conditions ya know. =)

Hope that helps!

Old Geckos, Ahhhh Yes.

Just a Suggestion for Senior Citizen Geckos, that
have never been held. (to keep from a nasty bite)
Get a pair of light weight garden pruners gloves.(all cloth)
(1) Handle the gloves to try to get your scent on them.
(2) Glove on, make a fist.
(3) Soak your knuckles in water.
(4) Slide your knuckles toward "old people gecko."
(5) See if he hits it.
(6) if he does, continue the process 2 or 3
times a day til he stops.
(7) Continue using the glove until you get him
climbing on the glove hand. When your
confidence allows you to remove the glove,
continue the knuckle/water method.
(8) If he gets stuck on the glove while biting,
hold still until he frees himself. Don't tug,
let him get unattached on his own. He will learn:
....Scent is a friend
....Water is a friend
Before you work without the glove:
make sure you are handling him,
taking him from his habitat,
holding him to your body,
and he feels ok with attaching
to you.
It works for young and old....but old gecko
jaw strength is mightier than human skin.
Take care. HJ
