Taming

Since yesterday (the day i got him) i started trying to tame. Was this a bad idea? I put my palm flat in the enclosure next to her and wait for her to crawl on. She is very skittish. Although she is active during the day which I like. Right now she has a calcium d3 dish in there and a water dish. The set up is simple now but I'm getting more supplies later today. She has 2 hides a heat mat and a heat bulb for the ambient air. Hasn't been fed yet. But how do I go about taming this little skittish one, the breeder seemed to take her and put her in a container no problem. If anyone can help me tame that would be nice.

She is a cutie! Give her time, she is in a new environment. You might want to cover the sides with construction paper or something for a while to help her feel more secure. And maybe get some fake plants so everything doesn't feel so wide open to her. Laying your hand in the cage and letting her come to your hand is a good idea, it's just too soon as she is still getting used to her new home.

I wanted to add that you probably can achieve the temps you need with just the heat pad. You probably don't need that heat bulb, especially a bright one like that. What are you measuring temps with?

I second Lisa. Leave her completely alone for a week, then start with the hand-in-the-cage thing. And I know you said you're getting more supplies so after you do post a pic! But keep Lisa's advice in mind when shopping. And yes, heat mats are best and completely necessary

Leos generally calm down considerably as they get older. They are not "untame" but using their bitty gecko survival instincts that tell them to avoid big predators at all costs. Like the other two have said, give her time. Around 25g it will be safer to hold her. Until then they tend to spaz out and kamikaze jump from great heights...lol.

Hey guys sorry i did not respond. And before i read any of this, I went ahead and hand fed her 6 small crickets. She was very interested. At first they annoyed her, then she found out it was food and starting picking them off no problem. Has some accuracy issues, probably because the breeder had her one a mealworm staple. The first few hand feds were me pinching the cricket, the last one i ripped off all but two legs of the cricket and placed it on my palm. I watched this channel on Youtube called bellaboy. She apparently has very good videos and advice based on the comments. She tells how to tame leos. So i want to hear from you guys, on how you guys tamed your geckos.

Osteoform and vionate are vitamin and calcium supplements. I would put a small bowl (I use soda caps) of the osteoform in the tank with your gecko and put a pinch of the osteoform and vionate in the bowl with your feeders or put the crickets in a cup and shake them up with it before you feed. The supplements should "dust" the insects and the gecko should consume the powders when they eat them.
