I use the PE-2. Simply because the Field of View is smaller and it has a laser pointer to drive the cat nuts. Works great - no complaints.

For starters I won't buy anything off EBAY, second the first temp gun looks cheesy.

I'll still push for the PE-1 tried and proven to work.

Agreed. Plus, the second eBay link shows one with probes that essentially integrates with the RC car - if you use that, you might as well get a theromostat anyway, since probes are going to need to be in the tank.

I have a thermostat. Which is why i'm just looking for a cheap one. And whats wrong with buying on ebay?

EDIT: I didn't mean to post that second link. That was the wrong one, but the one I meant to put was too expensive anyway.

If you ask me your taking a chance on buying anything over the internet. You keep hearing more and more of stolen merchandise being sold on Ebay, not to mention all of the horror stories of people not recieving what they paid for.

I think it's more me then anything else but Ebay just is too weird or I just don't trust the people on it.

I don't know........... I'm just weird

I see your point, but that is why they have the feedback option. You can see how buyers rated every one of the sellers products and service. I do not buy from anyone with even 1 negative rating, or a new seller. I have never had a problem and have bought many things on ebay.

The ratings aren't reliable when it's a hacked account. Yeah the real user may have great feedback, but the user that hacked it has no intention of keeping it that way. You really have to be careful, it's really sad.

I lost $2600 on an ebay purchase (a computer) when I was younger. From here on out, I refuse to spend more than $50 on ebay. I figure, I can deal with loosing $50, but no more. I wouldn't be happy loosing $50, but its way better than $2600.

Ebay really is great and typically hassle free, but I can understand why many people are wary of using it.

Oh, well I have never bought anything more than the Bears jersey I just got for 80. Other than that, I haven't spent more than 30 on a single purchase. How necessary do you think a temp gun is if I have a thermostat?

I am using rheostats, so that is one reason why I have a temp gun. It would also be a nice back up to the t-stat just incase it fails. But you would hope that if it failed it would cool down and not heat up.

One thing to think about is the field of view. The mini and the pe-1 are 1:1, meaning that if you measrure from 2 feet away you are measuring and area 2 square feet. The temp's within this area can differ quite a bit. The pe-2 is 8:1 so if you are the same 2 feet away you are measuring an area 3 square inches, much more accurate.

I have a PE-1 and bought it from LLL Reptile. I love it as it is accurate and very easy to use.

So if I hold it a few inches off the ground, I'm good then, right? It's purely backup so I do not want to spend much more than the mini.

I use the PE-1 and I usually am taking temps with the gauge about 1-2 inches from the surface. I am also taking multiple temp readings when doing so. I have noticed the temp differences by just moving half an inch.
