Temp to hot

I have a 20 gallon long tank housing one male gecko. I'm having an issue I think with the temperature. I originally had a uth on the side of the tank, and a heating pad under the tank to keep up the temp not realizing where I had the thermometer was in the wrong place. Poor guy we were cooking him the temp said 110. I talked with that fish place in Lancaster PA and he mention that I put the thermometer down at the bottom (thats how I found out the temp was so high) I immediately took out the heating pad and removed the uth from the side and placed it under the tank. With no light on and a uth underneith the one side I got up this morning and the temperature is still reading 100. I have the green carpet in the tank, but I also have the temperature thing sitting right on top of where the heater would be. Would that be why it's reading 100? Should I move it to another location within the hot side to see what it reads? I tried posting pics of my tank but it said my images were to big, I didn't have time to repost because I knew getting the temp down is more important

Your thermometer probe should be about half way between the bottom and top of the tank at the hot end.easiest way to make sure you stay in a certain temp range is hook your uth and other heating items up to a rheostat.

Please keep in mind there isn't much in here right now. I want to get his temperature correct before I worry about the other stuff. I am actually also looking into ceramic tile right now to put a shelf in for him.

That should work fine. Just get a digital thermometer to check your temps. Those stick on things are no good for checking floor temps.
