Terrified gecko

My little blizzard is still terrified of me. I went and got tile yesterday and was going to redo the tank. I put my hand in the tank before attempting to pick her up. After a minute or so, I tried. She completely lost her dang mind. She was running all over the place, literally bashing into the glass to try to get away from me. I left her alone to calm down for a bit. She did the same thing the next time. I let my boyfriend try to get her and he made it look too easy. I dont get it :( . Maybe she just doesnt like me. I put my hand in her tank everyday for at least 5 minutes. Ive had her for a few weeks now and still havent been able to hold her. I'm hoping she will calm down soon. Could she just be a scaredy cat her whole life? Or should she mellow out as she gets older? Also, does anyone else have an adult leo that is still scared of people?

Does anyone have any other methods I could try? I always wash my hands before I put one into her tank. I just feel bad for her. Presley was never that scared of me when he was little

You have only had her for a few weeks. Give it time. I have had my baby just a tad over a month and she will now let me move my hand up to her which she licks now and doesn't bite thank to some great advice about putting some water in my hand. She used to bite my regularly. She is still a little one but she is becoming used to me. Give her time. Also just a tip from little ole me. BE confident. Don't go in there with the thought she will freak out. I am a strong believer that animals can sense fear or hesitation. If I am a little tiny thing and someone comes to pick me up but the are nervous or scared. I would be nervous and scared. Try the water on your hand and slowly move it towards her. eventually she will get used to you. Try and be patient.

Thanks. I've tried the water. My boyfriend can just pick her right up without a problem:main_rolleyes:. Me, on the other hand she doesnt want near her. Gotta keep trying I guess

My first leo was the devil when he was young. If I had my hand on one side of the tank and he was on the other, he would still try and bite me. Hid anytime someone came by. A evil coward.

He calmed down alot but he still struggles when I try and pick him up, still runs into the glass ocasionaly, and hides more than the other two.

To sum it up, he got better but he's still a nasty little guy, he's my favorite because of it though :main_thumbsup:

But that doesn't mean your gecko will be the same.

I only handle my geckos once month when i clean the tanks.

Mig, my male thick tailed gecko has always been ok with me. I can put my hand in front of him and he will climb up and sit there.

Antonina will usually run from me but now she is getting better and seems to be getting used to seeing me, lol she no longer barks at me witch is always good sign. You just have to be patient.

Always approach them slowly and face on, never from above or behind, they need to see your hand coming slowly and very low.

I had the same problem here with two of my leo's. I could pick them up without a hitch but my housemate could not. She wears bright fingernail polish, I asked her to remove it to see the outcome.....she has been able to pick them up since then. We have to remember that some colors in the wild mean different things. Alot of reds mean poison, danger. Makes since to me. Good luck, I know how frustrating this can be, don't take it personaly.

Thanks guys. I dont wear nail polish. And if I do, it's black. No bright colors here haha

I also make sure she can see my hand at all times

She hasnt tried to bite me, so thats a good thing. And she doesnt stick her tail into the air anymore. She just flat out runs from me.

My geckos I got 2 weeks ago aren't warmed up to me either.:D

All will allow me to handle them, but my SHTCTB runs from me, and my high yellow female is the devil, I swear.

She FREAKS OUT if I remove anything from her cage. She'll run from one end to the other and rams her nose into the cage several times as she crawls all over everything.

She squeaks at me. She tries to back out my hands, at times, when I'm holding her. And when she isn't doing that, she will hang upside down in my hand, or she'll walk up to my shoulder, over, and just hand upside down.
AND she pottys in weird places in her cage. Usually on her humid hide, but I had to clean off the top of her warm hide yesterday because she went there.

But I'm hoping she levels out soon. She's only been here for not even two weeks yet.

My male, on the other hand, he's just a lover (kind of). He's just calm when you hold him. But he does like to crawl all over. As long as he's not squeaking at me...

I have both of my Gecko's for almost a year, not quite.. anyway I just let them come to me, if not I leave them alone. I can clean their cage with them in it. I just use water and paper towels to clean. I figure if they want to be touched they will come to my hand, of not then I let them alone. They usually run, so I don't bother them. Though the orange gecko sometimes will climb on my hand.

Ninja the other Gecko usually runs and hides. Some gecko's don't like to be touched, others don't mind and like it. Also if you are kind of scared a glove, the kind you do dishes with will help you..If they bite you won't feel a thing.
Try a glove and try picking it up..I had to when I first got my gecko's..I could pick them up and if they bite me I never feel it..then I let them crawl down my arm or back. :main_laugh::main_laugh:..I mean until you get used to picking them up. Was funny cause the orange gecko kept licking my glove, though it was clean and I never used the gloves, where new from the store. Hey if you bite me I am not gonna feel a thing and I didn't. Though the one gecko bite a a hole though my glove, so be careful of that. I had to get a new glove. Now though I could pick them up without it being that bad.
