Decapitated Snake Bites Man Before Biting Dust
Rattler 5 Feet Long

POSTED: 11:36 am PDT August 9, 2007

PROSSER, Wash. -- Apparently, even a dead snake can bite.

A man said he was bitten by the decapitated head of a rattlesnake on his property near Prosser, Wash.

Danny Anderson and his son saw the 5-foot rattler Monday evening while feeding horses.

They pinned it with a pipe and cut off its head with a shovel.

When Anderson reached down to pick it up, he said, the snake head twisted around and bit his index finger.

In the 10 minutes it took to reach Prosser Memorial Hospital, the venom spread through his body and his tongue had already started to swell.

He was treated with shots at the hospital.

A state Fish and Wildlife Department biologist said it's possible the snake had the heat-sensing ability to make one last attack -- or it may have been a reflex.

The snake WAS venemous, and if it was close to the family's house or horses I can completely understand their reaction. I don't think it's fair to joke about how great it would be if the guy had died or lost a hand. People are always, ALWAYS more important than animals. I feel sorry for the snake, but still... I don't find the above comments humorous in any way.

My intention was never to imply I think the guy deserved to be injured. I was more implying... make sure it's dead before you pick it up! Either way..that'll teach him.

Yeah, the picking it up part was really stupid. It surprised me though that the fish and game department thought that the pits might still have been working... I would've just assumed it was a reflex. Learn something new everyday! :)

The Northwestern subspecies of that rattlesnake is known for being pretty shy and secretive. They usually just sit there or try and get away. It's fairly rare to see one rattle. I don't feel that bad someone got bit. Especially since it was 5 feet long and probably lived on the property peacefully for years.

I'm sure everyones heard the top ways to get bit by a rattlesnake. Either being drunk and macho or trying to kill it.
