Inspired by this post I decided to put some effort into a little write up on my experience with this trait...
As far as the Blizzard eye traits I can't say for sure that you would, but most likely yes...
I have not paired Snake Eye Blizzard to Snake Eye Blizzard, but have done these pairings:
Snake Eye Blizzard x Mack Snow
Results...
- 1.0 Snake Eye Mack Snow
- 1.1 Mack Snow (gene carriers*)
- 1.0 Mack Snow (gene carrier?)
- 0.1 Mack Pastel (gene carrier**)
- 2.1 Mack Snow (gene carriers?)
The following season I did these pairings:
Mack Snow het Blizzard (eye gene carrier) x Snake Eye Blizzard
Results...
- 1.2 Eclipse (solid black eyes) Blizzard
- 1.1 Snake Eye Mack Snow
Mack Snow het Blizzard (eye gene carrier) x Mack Snow het Blizzard (eye gene carrier)
Results…
- 0.1 Eclipse Blizzard
- 0.2 Eclipse Mack Snow (have faded since hatching)
- 2.1 Mack Snow
- 0.1 Super Snow
- 1.2 “Normalâ€
Mack Snow het Blizzard (eye gene carrier) x Mack Pastel het Blizzard (eye gene carrier)
Results…
- 0.1 Eclipse Blizzard
- 0.3 “Normalâ€
It’s obvious that this trait is not recessive… Although it does seem that way in the "heterozygous" form... I think it may be co-dominant or incomplete dominant, but I’m no genetics expert so don’t quote me on that… I definitely believe that the Mack Snow gene(s) is playing a major role in my “experimentâ€â€¦ I have never hatched a gecko that wasn’t a Blizzard or Mack Snow with Snake Eyes or Eclipse eyes… That doesn’t mean that you can’t, but I have never heard of it at this frequency…
I’m left with these questions:
Are the Snake Eyes and Eclipse eyes on the Mack Snows het markers?
If so, why did only one Mack Snow have them from my original pairing?
Are all normal eyed offspring from Snake Eyed or Eclipse parents gene carriers?
Does breeding gene carrier x Snake Eye reduce the odds of producing Eclipse eyed offspring?***
Are Snake Eyes and Eclipse eyes variations of the "homozygous" form rather than separate mutations?
* This pair were proven to be gene carriers by producing Eclipse eyed offspring while being physically void of the trait.
** Was proven a gene carrier by producing Eclipse eyed offspring with above sire while being physically void of the trait.
*** Only Snake Eyed Mack Snows were produced from pairing Mack Snow het Blizzard (eye gene carrier) x Snake Eye Blizzard. Mack Snow het Blizzard (eye gene carrier) x Mack Snow het Blizzard (eye gene carrier) produced only Eclipse eyed offspring.
I think that is about everything, but might have missed something... Please feel free to post your own findings and ask any questions... I apologize for not providing pics... I hope my words are good enough...
