Thermometers and Temp Guns

Are temperature guns a suitable replacement for thermometers? Would a cheap 20 dollar one from wally world do the trick?

Temp guns work really well for surface temps, but you will still need a digital thermometer to check ambient air temps.

It seems most people don't check air temps for Leo's, although I do. I tried something out of curiosity. I hung a probe down towards the center of a tank. Then I pointed my temp gum aiming across right next to where the probe was hanging and both actually read the same temp. So I am guessing the temp gun picked up the air temp by reflection of the glass.
