i get confused overe all the differant type of 'Habistat' thermostats. I need one to connect to a light bulb (im told this is correct. i also have a heat mat under the cage) My tank is about 60cmx30cmx40cm. Do i need the 600watt thermostat or the 300 watt thermostat?

any help appreciated

It all depends on the wattage of the light bulb. All you really need is an appliance dimmer (got mine from Home Depot, Walmart, k-mart, Menards, etc... They are rated for 150w and 300w. I use mine on the heat pad to drop it down to around 88-92 degrees and put the heat lamp a foot or two away from the top of the cage. get one side of the cage to about 77 degrees and the other end about 90. Make sure that heat lape is a red, purple, or blue light. They dont like bright lights becuse they are nocturnal! Get those temps and they will grow great! Any other ?s shoot me a email!

honestly you don't need a light bulb above the tank, if you do get one you can get a red or blue that allows you to see the leos at night that are low watts or as abouve use a dimmer for a few bucks.

the heat mat will need a thermostat but thats different than a light bulb needing one.

7.25 watts may be enough depending on the total size of the matt itself. Id plug it in and see how hot it gets without a heat control and check it several times day for a few days, it will probably get hotter than the 90-92 needed for leos.

The habi stat looks nice but Ive never used one and I am unsure of what it is comparable to here in the US.

I did some looking and it looks like the one you are talking about is a low end on/off thermostat instead of proportional. Some people use them with OK success, some with good and some out right fail.

Id see if you can find something that has a proportional type temp control.

cheers 4 that mate, really appreciate it! Though, just wondering what you mean by proportional? do you mean one with a dial where you can set the required tempeture?

a proportional thermostat controls the amount of power going to the heat source instead of cutting off and on like he cheaper ones so it controls temps much better and they stay more stable.

Yes, get the one that has the dial, that way all you do is put the probe inside of the tank on top of the heat pad, set it for 90 degrees, and let it be. It will keep the temps on that spot a constant, or close to, 90 degress all the time. But, you should still keep a thermometer in the tank to measure the temps that way to make sure it is correct.
