After struggling with dimmers (no good!) and Repti -Temp 500R thermostats and watching my warm hide temps bounce all over the place, I decided to give the Spyder Robotics Herpstat a try, and ordered a few for testing in my terrariums.
Thanks for those here who gave input on these proportional thermostats.
After carefully testing the Herpstat, I'm please to say that I am thrilled with the performance of this stat. Once set up, and after about one hour of stabilization, the Herpstat keeps the warm hide at a very stable temp, with a tight range of just 0.1 to 0.2 degrees! This will undoubtedly have a positive effect on the leos so their temp is not jumping around, hot then cool then hot and so on. So, I LOVE this thermostat and will now buy more for my rack setups and other terrariums I have. Some also use the Herpstat for their incubators and I can understand why. Excellent.
I did notice a very slight discrepancy when checking the Herpstat digital temp readout against a traceable digital temp unit with probe taped at the same location as the Herpstat's....there was about a 0.5 degree difference. No big deal. It is good to know this though, and I recommend checking the Herpstat against a good digital temp unit to see what yours may read out. So, if I want my warm hide to be 94F, I would actually set the Herpstat to 93.5.
I also recommend always using a small piece of masking tape to secure the temp probe level against the surface of your hide to be sure it is giving a true reading of the actual surface temp.
Hope this little beta test was useful for you all.
