Thoughts on a broken jaw of young beardie?

Hello, I am a Beardie breeder among other reptiles and a Vet Tech Animal Home Health Specialist, But I am totally in awe over this. I got a call from someone who needed assistance with a beardie, on the phone they said it was bleeding from the mouth I rushed over because in my business I can assess the problem then rush to the Vet and many times people are just freaking out over nothing. Anyways When I got there I heard this story: "I was feeding my beardies roaches and I love to watch them fight over the roaches, But then they attacked each other to get a roach out of the one that is hurts mouth and in the process the aggressor bit the jaw and wouldn't let go so I pulled it off and then I saw the blood and then called you"
So I check it out and indeed the jaw is broken. So I rushed it to the Vet they wanted me to take it to and all I heard was that there was nothing he could do it should heal on its own. So I am asking any one of you if you have had it heal on its on before Keep in mind this one is only 6 months old and very small for its age as this is my first call for a beardie with a broken jaw. I will travel 2 hours to the Reptile Vet for these people if it can be fixed. It did eat a small cricket and small mealie without trouble but only one of each so I am sure there is some pain there. Any thoughts on this would be great. Thanks, Deb

most of the time vets let reptiles heal on there own. they are good healers. but he should have at least given him something for the pain. I would advise the owner of these dragons to keep them apart and to no longer put her animals in harmfull situations for her own enjoyment.

now im not a pro on beardies yet.

but i think if you do take it to the vet than they will more than likely tell you to let it heal on its own.

alsong as its eating....

my reason::: i really dont think they can do anything to treat it machanically.

Reptiles are good healers. I've purchased a large lot of bearded dragons a few years back and one came in w/ a broken jaw. The best thing you can do if the vet wont interveine is keep him close to a UVB source, and make sure he gets a little more calcium w/ d3 than usual, this will help in aiding the quick recovery of the injury. this is what my vet had advised me to do and in weeks the beardie was back to its normal self.

If the dragon can not chew without pain- I would suggest getting a box of
Flukers Rept-A-Aid
insectivore/carnivore formula
and syringe feed him until his jaw heals
poor baby

Wow Thanks everyone for the info. The lady has turned the Beardie over to me to care for and so far she is doing very good. She is eating pretty well and she is housed alone. High UVB and heat and on paper towels. The jaw is a tad swollen but now she isn't acting like its hurting her. So She is here to stay because like you all feel. I told her that was inhumane what she was doing and if she truely cared for this Beardie she would turn it over to me. Because she couldn't even afford the Vet. I am a Wild Life Rehabber too so I get many wild ones to care for. I am just glad she is eating and hanging in there. Thanks Deb

Glad she's with someone who wont basicly put her in beardie wars for food. *shakes head*
Good luck with her. I'm sure she's in a FAR better home.

Hello Everyone, Just a update on this very sweet girl and more news. She is eating very well,I keep all her food soft so in greens she gets mustard and turnip greens chopped fine and in bugs everything is small and either freshly molted or smaller than she would normally get for her size. She also gets tiny lobster roaches and she loves them. Plus calcium, vitamins and meds. That lady was feeding her full grown lobsters so she could watch the dragons rip them apart Her Jaw is looking much better after I lined it up, very minimal swelling now I have since went back and taken the remaining four that has limbs missing and wounds. I didn't see them when I was there at first since she had taken the female with the broken jaw out. I later thought that since there was more than one in the cage I need to check the others! I explained to her that all of them needed medical attention and if she didn't let me provide care for them I would call animal control. She acted like she felt terrible about it all so, so far I haven't turned her in but HAVE taken many pictures of all the wounds, missing limbs and the Jaw just incase I do. All are doing well but are missing at least one hind leg and some toes. Many are almost healed so I believe these dragons were not getting enough food and then were given food and the frenzy began. I have 5 total one has no back legs from the knee area down. One has one hind leg missing clear at the hip, One has a missing foot and the other is at the knee also then the one with the jaw injury has part of her foot gone yet its healed. These will be staying here. I will take some pictures of them to show their injury but also to show how beautiful they are. Its so sad people do these kind of things to animals and reptiles. I see this alot I hate to say. Thanks for everyones reponses I will continue to update. Deb

OMG-missing limbs to that extent has got to be the result of starvation
I am so glad that you have them now
I rescued a very young male from a pet shop years ago that had the same problem
The kid that worked there told me that they fed the young babies pellets every day and crickets once per week
CAN YOU IMAGINE???
Anyway-he had half of his one back leg missing and a front foot missing and a very short tail
He did well for me for around 6 yrs and then he passed on-I dare say the improper start in life didn't help him live nearly the length of time that his should have
He was a dear dragon and could climb as well as any dragon with all 4 intact limbs
they are amazing animals
Anyway- I'm glad to hear that you rescued the others and I hope that they do well for you
:D
