I just wanted to share that I had bought a 12"x24" slab of tile (cost $4.80 w/tax) to put in a new 10 gallon I picked up. The Lowe's by my house cut it for FREE. Another Lowe's had told me it was 25¢ per cut, so either way it was more than reasonable. I had 6 cuts made so it was in 4 pieces and easier to remove from the tank. They also had less expensive tile. I just liked the look and texture of this tile. Thought I would share for anyone considering switching to tile as a substrate and wondering about cost, or where they could get it cut.
This is the tile I went with:
A tip for installing: I went a 1/2" smaller than the inside dimensions of the tank. I filled any gaps (only had a small gap on two sides) with aquarium airline tubing. The tubing fits tightly in the gaps so I had to use a butter knife to push it down and left a tiny bit extra on the ends so I could pull it out if needed. This makes it really easy to remove the tiles if necessary.
I've used this method on 3 aquariums now and it has worked great for me. I hope this will be helpful to someone!
